Before You Buy Another Colostrum, Read This
Colostrum works. But most colostrum brands mislead you about what they're selling — inflated numbers, shortcuts, and a lot of corporate-speak. Here's the real story.
The Story Behind kāre
Fourteen years ago, our first son was two days old when our doctor noticed something on his blanket — green spit-up. She tested it right away.
Within hours he was rushed to Primary Children's Hospital. The diagnosis was necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) — a serious infection of the intestines that mostly affects newborns. The doctors laid out three possible outcomes: he could fight off the infection on his own, he could lose part of his intestine and live with a colostomy bag for the rest of his life, or he could die.
My wife had just had a C-section, so she couldn't be with him at the hospital. The doctors told us to get him as much colostrum as possible. So she pumped her own colostrum, and I drove it up to the NICU, over and over, so they could feed it to him through his tubes.
Two weeks later, we brought him home. No surgery. No colostomy bag. He's 14 now, and doing great.
I had no idea human colostrum could do that. And I had no idea it was something used outside of infancy. That experience sent me down a rabbit hole. I started researching colostrum — first human, then bovine — and trying different bovine colostrum products for myself. What I found was disappointing: inflated numbers, low-quality sourcing, shortcuts. Nothing that matched what I'd just watched colostrum do for my own son.
So I decided to build the product I couldn't find — sourced properly, tested honestly, and good enough to trust with my own family.
That's how kāre started.

The Problem in the Market
Colostrum works. The colostrum industry, not so much.
When you look at competitor labels and marketing, you'll see something like "35% IgG" or "highest concentration of immune antibodies." Big numbers. Sounds impressive.
Here's what they don't tell you: not all IgG numbers are created equal.
Some brands test their colostrum with uncorrected methods. This means they're counting damaged protein clumps — the kind of aggregates that form when colostrum gets heated, frozen, or over-processed. These damaged proteins still register on basic IgG tests, so the number looks great on paper. In your body? They don't work.
It's the difference between a bottle saying "100g of protein" and actually having 100g of protein your body can absorb and use.
We test differently. We use turbidity correction — basically, we filter out the damaged proteins and count only what actually works.
That's just the testing. Then there's the sourcing, the processing, the serving size recommendations. Most brands cut corners somewhere. We decided to cut corners nowhere.
What Honest Colostrum Looks Like
Testing that counts.
Some colostrum brands report IgG with uncorrected testing methods — measuring damaged proteins alongside active ones. We test with turbidity correction, which strips out the clumped, non-bioactive material. Our current batch: 26.8% IgG.
You'll notice our IgG varies from batch to batch. That's because our cows roam freely on pasture — farmers collect colostrum at different times depending on when they find the cows and calves. That variation is proof of genuine, free-roaming farming, not a flaw. We're transparent about it instead of standardizing artificially.
Serving size truth.
We recommend 1–2 scoops a day. That's it. That's what the research supports, and that's what we tested at when we formulated the product. Not "4+ scoops" (which quietly makes a 120-day jar into a 30-day jar). Not "whatever works best for you" (corporate speak for "we didn't do the homework"). 1–2 scoops.
Whole colostrum, nothing removed.
Some brands filter, concentrate, or aggressively process to bump up one or two compounds. We do none of that. You get colostrum as close to nature as possible — nothing added, nothing removed. That means the hundreds of bioactive compounds work together, the way evolution designed them.
Year-round grass-fed. Actually.
Our cows graze outdoors 365 days a year on New Zealand's South Island. Not barn-raised in winter. Not feedlot. Year-round fresh grass — ~95% of their diet. That matters because cows aren't routinely vaccinated pre-calving the way some overseas farms do. Vaccination elevates antibody (IgG) output artificially. Our cows? Just healthy animals on pasture. The IgG you get is genuine, not inflated by farm management.
Full transparency. Always.
We publish our full composition: IgG, IgA, IgM, lactoferrin, growth factors, protein, fat, lactose. Everything. If you want to compare us to competitors, ask them for the same detail. Most can't answer.

What Research Suggests Colostrum May Support
Immune resilience.
Colostrum's IgG, IgA, IgM, and lactoferrin may support the body's natural immune response. Research suggests that colostrum supplementation has been shown to support upper-respiratory resilience in athletes.
Gut health.
Growth factors and immune proteins in colostrum may support mucosal integrity and the gut barrier. Research suggests colostrum may help support the body's natural repair of the GI lining.
Athletic recovery.
Multiple studies have shown colostrum outperforms other protein sources for recovery time, anaerobic power, and performance after intense training. Athletes report faster recovery, less soreness, and better endurance outcomes.
Tissue and cellular repair.
Colostrum's growth factors (IGF-1, IGF-2, EGF, TGF-α/β) may support the body's natural cellular repair and regeneration processes.
Skin, hair, and bone.
The same growth factors studied for tissue repair are also researched for skin elasticity, hair quality, and bone density — essentially, supporting the body's own repair and renewal systems.

How to take it.
1–2 scoops per day. Jar or stick packs (customers love the stick packs for travel).
Important. Never mix with hot liquid — heat destroys the bioactive compounds that make it work. Cold or lukewarm water, smoothies, coffee, tea — whatever you like, as long as it's not steaming.
This page is what I wish existed when I was driving colostrum to the NICU. It's the honest story, the real science, and the product that matches both.
